Hello -

My son will be attending Elon University in the fall. I currently live in PA but I am planning to move to NC before the end of the year. I have been looking in the Greensboro or Burlington areas, but I am open to other areas. Doing research online is difficult and I would appreciate feedback from those that actually live in NC as to which areas to avoid and such.

Would someone be able to identify apartment complexes in the area that they would recommend? I
have a dog, so I want to feel safe walking the dog and being outdoors. Also not fond of bugs of any kind. Close proximity to shopping would be nice, but not required. Pool would also be a nice to have, but not required.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback!

Do the BOTH of you a favor and look much farther away than that.

Unless you really NEED to leave PA... stay put for a couple of years.
Let your son have his college experience without Mom.

If/when you do move to NC choose a location that suits YOU and YOUR life.

I did a quick google search for pet friendly apartments. One of the newer complexes that popped up is the Greenway. It's downtown and convenient to shops and restaurants. I've never been inside.

There will be bugs. There are no areas that have fewer than other areas.

Thanks MrRational -

I'm not moving to NC just to be close to my son. We've had plans to move South depending on where he went to college. (He has to live on campus for the first 2 years) That's why I am looking for an area close to Elon, I'd say no more than 1/5 hours away, just not next door to the campus. I just don't know the state to pick an area let alone a place to live and not second guess myself. I don't need to worry about a job as I will be able to keep my current job and work from home. So that alleviates some of the stress.

Missey--for an apartment, what are you looking to pay each month in rent? How many bedrooms?

Burlington has multiple new apartment complexes close to shopping, the interstate, and Elon (if you need it).

It's a very cool area, and both Winston and Greensboro have their own distinct character. You'll also learn to appreciate that cities in NC are like pearls on a string—there's one right after the other within a relatively short drive, with a pretty varied set of topography (mountains, hills, woods, ocean, etc).
