Hello everyone,

I will be relocating to the Triad area next month for a job in Kernersville. I visited recently and noticed that depending where you have to go Greensboro, Kernersville, and Winston are not too bad of a ride from each other (traffic isn't anything like here in NY from what I saw). So the commute isn't much of an issue.

I wanted to know if anyone could recommend the better choice of these cities to settle down. I'll be renting for a year or two just to get a feel for the area and then start house hunting. I'd like to stay under $1K for a 2 or 3bd apt and ideally a neighborhood with great schools (two girls both in elementary). Any input is appreciated! Thanks so much.

Kernersville isn't horrible, but WSFC schools leaves something to be desired. Guiford County Schools, some of the schools are really good, some aren't. I'd suggest a smaller town like Jamestown.

It's far too soon for that question.

There ya go. Do so as close to the job as practical.

Great? If that is truly the objective I can't recommend anywhere in NC.
Adequate to good however is manageable.

For school reviews... greatschools.com but dig past the surface.

I disagree with this distinction between the schools in Forsyth and Guilford. That statement (some good, some bad) is true for both WSFCS and Guilford County. The better schools in Forsyth, for the most part, are in the western part of the county, though, farther away from K-Ville. So you might be better off in an area like Oak Ridge or Summerfield.

There are good schools and good neighborhoods in both G'boro and W-S. The best schools in those cities are proabably better than K'ville, but K'ville has good schools as well.

Thank you all for your responses. I'll be there again the beginning of the month to lease an apartment and check out a few school recommendations.

If quality of schools were my #1 priority, I'd pick Oak Ridge. We chose northeast Davidson County due to good (not great) schools, low taxes, and proximity to everywhere in the Triad.

Since your job is in Kernersville, what about Kernersville? It's about as centrally located to the rest of the Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and even High Point- which is often the red headed stepchild of the area) as you can get, so you'll have very easy access to check out larger cities (at least large for the area). It's a charming little town in its own way as well with an established downtown along with your run of the mill suburbs with the fenced in large yard for the dogs, etc.

And even though commuting in the Triad isn't as treacherous as many places, not having much of a commute at all would be a huge plus!
