Having to play third fiddle to the Triangle and Charlotte is really doing a number to job growth in Greensboro (and Winston for that matter). The Triad really needs the Toyota/Mazda deal to hit.

The Triad needs to find an economic identity. Greensboro and Winston-Salem are seeing job growth but significant job growth is not going to happen by trying to become the next RTP or the next Charlotte. Raleigh/Durham is a power house in research and innovation and while both research parks in Greensboro and Winston-Salem will see some success, they will never be the level of success that we see in Raleigh/Durham. Even today as research/technology related companies announce relocating to North Carolina, the Triad isn't even on their radar despite the fact that both cities have great universities and state-of-the-art research parks. The if you build it they will come strategy doesnt always work. Charlotte will always be the state's banking center so we need to find our own identity. There are opportunities with aviation and hitech manufacturing as well as the insurance end of the financial sector. Greensboro really needs to be more aggressive in attracting insurance companies because the city already has a history in being an insurance center. Greensboro needs to build on the presence of Lincoln Financial and Arch Capital. We need those high paying white collar jobs along with the high paying manufacturing jobs. We envy the large scale downtown developments in Charlotte and Raleigh but let us not forget why those developments are happening in the first place.
