Another pro sports team will call the Greensboro Coliseum. Arena football returns to the Gate City. The team will be called the Carolina Cobras.

As much as I love football, I've never been to an arena football game. But I definitely look forward to this.

That said, from what I read, there seem to be two leagues forming at the same time. There's the National Arena League (which the Cobras are joining) and the American Arena League (which appears to be the more desirable league and includes teams from Charlotte, Raleigh, Norfolk, and Richmond).

The competitors in the National Arena League would be Columbus (GA), Jacksonville, Trenton, Allentown, Worcester, and Monterrey (Mexico).

I wouldn't hold me breath over this team lasting more than a year or two (if it even plays at all). Frankly, I hope we can simply get into the AAL. Of course, there's no guarantee that that league lasts long either. There have been 18 arena football leagues that have sprung up over the last 20 years. Only 5 currently exist. Most leagues last four or fewer years.

I'll probably check them out, but yeah, the long-term viability is questionable based on past performance of the various indoor football leagues.

I'd love to check this out as well. I really don't know why the Arena league doesn't lost longer than it does. I know nothing will trump the NFL, but the few times I've tuned into the Arena league, it's always been fun to watch.

As I understand it, there is currently Arena Football League, National Arena League (in their upcoming second season, where Greensboro/Carolina Cobras will play), American Arena League (to start play in 2018, including the Triangle Torch in Raleigh...maybe?), and Indoor Football League.

It seems that the concept is viable and a good use of indoor arenas; I hope someday a league will stabilize (before they run out of acronyms lol). It seems like it would be fun to watch - pretty much all offense, very high scoring games.

I definitely look forward to going to a game or two this year. But looking at the leagues, I really hope we can join the AAL (or combine leagues with them). It'd be more interesting to play against teams from Raleigh and Charlotte than teams from Trenton and Monterrey. There would be some actual rivalries.
