"The authority said in a written news release that its vote last month to change the name of the airport to Central North Carolina International Airport was the beginning of a rebranding process and there's room for the public to make its voice heard.

After the name change was announced, local residents staged a mini revolt, writing a spate of letters to the editor and signing nearly 6,000 names to an anti-name-change petition posted on Change.org.

Although the name change was set to happen Jan. 1, the airport's website and road signs retain the Piedmont Triad International Airport name."

Why on earth would you seek public comments after the official announcement has already been made? Putting the cart before the horse.

That airport authority looks like a bunch of amateurs.

After all the public outcry, this is the right move

The right move would have been to first announce the contemplation of a name change and seek public input before voting on anything.

I knew something had to be up. They were supposed to start taking steps towards renaming the airport on 1/1, but when I caught a flight out of Greensboro on Friday, there were no changes (not even computer screens where literally all that would need to happen is click a button and it's changed). Same on Sunday when I returned. I said to my wife then that maybe they were going to scrap the ridiculous name.

Now it sounds like they might.

Neither Piedmont or Triad mean anything special or even at all very far outside the central NC area.
Airport names do not have to include the names of cities near them.

How about Nathanael Greene International Airport? He was the man Greensboro is named after. And yes, that is the proper spelling of his name. See below for more on this hero of the American Revolutionary War

How about a decent compromise solution?

North Carolina Triad International Airport (NCTriad for short) is an option. Basically replace Piedmont with North Carolina. It lets outsiders know the airport is in North Carolina (which is what the airport authority wants), with Triad included it pinpoints the location in the state. Its better than Central North Carolina which could be in Durham. Dont see much option considering they probably wont include the city names. Having all three city names is too long. But also North Carolina Triad International flows off the tongue better than Central North Carolina International.

It keeps the Triad name yet it lets outsiders know the airport is in North Carolina.
If there weren't TWO very large hubs in puddle jumper distance maybe...
but any advantage to keeping EITHER Triad or Piedmont in the name continues to elude me.

I just left McCarran International Airport. Not named for the location. The horror!
