Like LM117 mentioned, it's not about length, it's more of a marketing gimmick, since there's a bunch of 3-digit Interstates that are less than 2 miles long!

True and most 3 digit interstates are loops around cities. I-785 between Greensboro and Danville, VA will be 46 miles so typically they are not that long.

AASHTO has given it’s approval for I-285. Approval can be seen on page 5:

During their annual spring meeting last week, AASHTO has approved NCDOT’s request to designate US-52 between I-40 and the future Winston-Salem Northern Beltway (I-74/I-274) as Future I-285.

Seen on page 8.
