I am not aware of any other sites than Greensboro, Alamance County, and Orange County. I do know if sites outside North Carolina were or are under consideration.
Observing the locations considered and under consideration, Publix Super Markets is looking to locate a distribution center that can support a quantity of Publix supermarkets and possibly GreenWise Market specialty organic/gourmet grocery stores in North Carolina and Virginia. Stores in South Carolina are within range of distribution centers in Jacksonville, Florida, and Dacula, Georgia.
I do not know if locations in or surrounding Charlotte were considered or are being considered for the proposed distribution center.
Publix's Charlotte Division stores in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia are supported by the Dacula, Georgia, distribution center. The Dacula, Georgia, distribution center has high velocity, low velocity, dairy/boxed meat, produce, and frozen food warehouses.
For a brief time years ago, the high velocity warehouse at the Dacula, Georgia, distribution center reached capacity with addition stores that opened. A super velocity warehouse was opened in Austell, Georgia. It was replaced by a high velocity warehouse at the McCalla, Alabama, distribution center. The McCalla, Alabama, distribution center opened in 2017.
Publix has a need for another distribution center. Additional stores are opening in the Atlanta and Charlotte divisions. The Dacula, Georgia, distribution center could be approaching or has reached capacity to keep up with the additional stores to support. Another distribution center in a strategic location to support a quantity of stores with necessary warehouses would help relieve a burden with the Dacula, Georgia, distribution center, allow two distribution centers to support additional stores, and operate efficiently.
If the Greensboro, North Carolina, is announced officially, it is to be determined which warehouses the distribution will have and the territory of stores it would support. Some stores in South Carolina and Tennessee could remain supported by the Dacula, Georgia, distribution center because of proximity.
^ Ok. Maybe I naturally presumed that a division would include distribution, as it appears to be set up in all of the other divisions in Publix.
