Default Why is Surry County referred to as "Sorry" County

I have been visiting the Peidmont area for a while (for some reason there is not a Peidmont Forum ... hmmm), and have found locals in Stokes County referred to Surry County as "Sorry County".

Is this just a bad joke, or is there more to it?

Maybe you are just hearing something different in the pronunciation? I have a hard time believing people living in Surry County would mean to call it a "sorry" place to live! It's actually one of the counties I really like because it has been unspoiled by development and still retains its native charm.

No ... there is no misunderstanding of the pronunciation.

Some people, in Stokes, call it Sorry County (meaning Surry County).

In fact, one person in particular, a Real Estate Agent from Stokes, constantly calls Surry County ... Sorry County.

Well, if it's truly a way to cut Surry County down, then shame on that realtor. I honestly cannot imagine any realtor would be stupid enough to do that - so are you SURE you aren't just reacting to their particular pronunciation? It's also possible someone from a neighboring county would say this I suppose as a way of looking down their nose at someone else. You know, the way people in New York City might do when talking about Newark, NJ

There is not a Piedmont forum due to many of the sub forums are base on metro areas and city data already has that http://www.ctnc.org/maps/piedmont.gif (broken link)

Yep, absolutely positively sure there is no misunderstanding on my part.

I will not name the agent for obvious reasons, but he always said Sorry County.

We never misunderstood any other thing he said. In fact, he is quite emphatic when saying it. It is not slurred or anything else.

Could it just be one of those odd dialect things, like with Canadians? They sound normal until they say something with an "o" in it, like "about". About sounds like Aboot...

I've never heard of Surry County being called Sorry County. I wonder why he'd call it that.

It's news to me too. I've been living in the state off and on for almost 48 years.

Me too. And like I said before, it is one of my favorite counties. I think if that person is trying to be derogatory it's just his personal problem - it is certainly not the majority opinion that Surry county is in any way "sorry".
