My wife is in with the Greensboro SAHM's group and she loves it. Lots of nice folks. Go to Meetup.com and run a search.

Absolutely worth it! I'm a transplant from NoVA myself and we like the zoo so much we bought a membership (well worth it if you go often). My wife is a stay at home mom as well and she takes our 20 month old daughter to the zoo regularly on day trips. It's only about a 30 minute drive from Greensboro. She also does the Mommy group thing, but she didn't like meetup groups because any group she tried to join was already established and hard to make friends in, but when she joined a newly formed group it worked out much better since everyone was new together.

Default Just Me

I have had a hard time with making friends here....it's probably me but I'm also not as social as I should be. Down here it seems like it's possible meeting other SAHMs at church ( I am a stay at home mom also). I have joined a group at meeting.com which seems promising. If you are in Winston, try a membership at Tanglewood Park - near Clemmons. Seems like another answerer said...people are a bit standoffish and at times seem a bit stuck up...keep trying

Hi Paula_from_Venus!

I will certainly keep that in mind. But I think all of us have become less actively outgoing than we used to be. It has to do with how our society has changed. People move so much more than they did, even in the 80's, especially more than the 50's! But also, the addition of the internet (notice how I slyly evaded using the word "invention" - LOL!) has left most people to tend to life from insdie the home. Cell phones, computer cameras, forums like this one even.

There was a study done by some sociologists. They did the same study over a long period of time, so it was a "Longitudinal Study." They redid it in the 80's, asked people how many close friend they have. The answer was 3-5. People then were just shocked! How could this be? how come people have so few close friends? Then they redid the study, I believe, at the turn of the century again and the results were even more striking: nearly all those asked said 0-2. And of those, many of the friends didn't even live nearby.

So, believe me when I say, it isn't *you* and it isn't me, it is the trend of our times.

I seriously doubt however that anywhere in NC is as bad as the DC metro area (which includes parts of Maryland and northern Virginia. I cannot count how many times I have said hello to someone in passing just to be sized up and unacknowledged, or just simply ignored altogether. And driving here will make anyone want to install a grenade launcher on the hood of their car, or the rear, so that the tailgaters and the left-lane "coffins-on-wheels" will finally leave them alone.

SO GLAD I am moving. When it comes to DC, I guess I can say: YES, there IS something as too much of a BAD THING.

Sincerely,
Angie

I just had my first swim lesson session this week with my toddler and I swear not one of the parents barely even cracked a smile! I am new at this mom thing and moved to W-S when my son was a few months shy of 1 yrs old, so I can't say if it is here or just people in general. Maybe moms of young kids are shy??? I tend to be super friendly and smile, but I don't go to church and it seems like the majority here do, so maybe they have their network that way?? Anyway, it is possible to make friend here, it just takes some work and effort.

OP,

I don't know what your religious affiliation is, or if you have one, but Westover Church is a great place to meet friends and support groups for mothers.
