There's an amazing team of event coordinators and organizers, as well a lot of wonderful volunteers, behind this festival. They all contribute a lot to its success.
If you've never been, you must go. I've been to all three years of the National Folk Festival and the inaugural North Carolina Folk Festival last year and it is a unique experience. A lot of food, music and events and it makes Greensboro feel like a big city. There was some concern that the NC Folk Festival would not be the same as the National Folk Festival but I can tell you I didn't notice a difference at all. It was as though the National Folk Festival came back for a fourth year. The organizers have done an amazing job. Its events like these that showcase our downtown and attract investment. The national arts council could have pick Asheville, Charlotte or Raleigh to host the National Folk Festival but they picked Greensboro because of our arts community, central location and they liked we we are doing downtown. I was amazed when I found out the North Carolina Folk Festival was one of the largest music festivals in the world. I think Greensboro can build on that and make it better and bigger each year. One thing the city can do is build more permanent public plazas/parks small and large like Lebauer Park that can serve as staging areas to eliminate the temporary tents and stages so that the festival really blends in with its surroundings. The old railyard in Southside would make a great park for a large stage if the railroad company sells the land to the city. The parking lot on South Elm next to McCouls would make a great urban plaza for a small stage and any proposed development for the News and Record property needs to have a large public space. An urban park which can accommodate festival events could also be built on the Merchants Association parking lot by the ballpark/Hyatt Place and future Carroll south of the ballpark development. In addition it would be great to see festival events, food kiosks, temporary art installations and demonstrations along the downtown greenway. A temporary trolley system like the one for the National Folk Festival could be put in place to transport people across downtown.
The city also needs to attract more festivals downtown. In addition to the NC Folks Festival, downtown hosts the Carolina Blues Festival and Winterfest. But I'd love to see at least one large festival a season.
Here is the official website and some artists have been announced.
In addition to the 7 or 8 stages in downtown Greensboro for the folk festival, downtown venues will also host acts. Once the Performing Arts Center opens I'm sure it will be in the mix as well.
