I've been advised not to use 95 to drive down, but to use 77 instead. Does anyone have the directions from NJ to Winston using 77? Thanks so much.

If you can get to I-81 in PA, then it's I-81 all the way through PA, WV, and VA until I-81 and I-77 meet. From there, cross over into NC, then you can take exit 101 to I-74 in Mt. Airy. Take I-74 to where it ends at NC-52, and follow NC-52 South all the way to W-S.

Be very careful of heavy fog at the higher altitiudes where I-81 and I-77 meet.

i think it takes longer if you use 77 instead of 95. if you leave NJ at a time where you wont hit rush hour in richmond, you should be fine. it will take about 9 hours

I 81 is the much better trip then 95, less traffic and almost no tolls. $.75 crossing into PA and that's it.

Well it does make a difference which part of NJ you are coming from also.
I am in the NE NJ area and I take I-78 to I-81 and go all the way to Roanoke, since I go to Thomasville, I switch over to 220 in Roanoke. I have driven the route to Winston, but prefer this one.
I can make in 8 and half hours easy. I hate going I-95, it is the pits!
