Its the first "green" hotel in North Carolina and the second "green" hotel built in the United States. The hotel has received awards and has even been mentioned in the New York Times. The Proximity is located about two miles northwest of downtown near its sister hotel "The O'Henry". The Proximity Hotel was named after the old Proximity textile mill in Greensboro. The hotel itself has cues from an old mill.

BTW here is the sister hotel down the road "The O'Henry Hotel". It was named after the original O'Henry hotel that was downtown. The hotel was named after famous American short story writer William Sydney Porter who used the pen name "O'Henry". William Sydney Porter was born in 1862 in Greensboro, NC. His most famous story was "Gift of the Magi"

Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul stayed here when American Idol had auditions in Greensboro a few years ago.

Here is a photo tour of another fancy hotel in Greensboro.

Not real fond of Grandover...but the other 2 (O'Henry & Proximtry Hotel) are gorgeous!

We just got the 1st 5 star Hotel in NC. The Ballantyne Resort in Charlotte. The 2nd 5 star is under construction (Ritz Carlton Uptown Charlotte). Donald Trump is gonna build another 5 star hotel in Uptown (heard it might be a Four Seasons). He is gonna build this mega complex in Uptown Charlotte. trumpcharlotte.com

There are 2 more hotels being built Uptown. A "W" Hotel and Twelve.

Greensboro is definatley on the move in the right direction. Can't wait to see it in about 5-10 years.

yea there seems to be a few fancy hotels being planned or on the drawing board for downtown Greensboro. I hope downtown Greensboro will have a hotel just as nice or nicer than the Proximity One thing I have noticed about Greensboro's nicest hotels is that they are not a part of a chain and are locally based. That really opens the door for the hotel developers to add alot of unique character.

Never stayed at the The O'Henry, but have been to their restaurant many times. One of the best places to eat in Greensboro IMHO.

Default A Winner!

It is a beautifully inspired classy Hotel. It reminded me of the Beverly Hills Hotel. I wish they had built in downtown but thats not Greensboro of course.
Congratulations to the local developer who is looking ahead. Again, a magnificient Hotel!! I love it!

All I can say if if they had built The Proximity Hotel in downtown Greensboro, WOW. Think of the image it would give downtown. The orginal O'Henry hotel that was demolished in 1979 due to a fire was downtown (where the Bellemeade parking deck is now) They revived the O'Henry Hotel although it was not built downtown. Maybe there is a chance they will revive the old 13-story King Cotton Hotel that was located in downtown Greensboro at the corner of Davie and Market Street (where the News & Record is now). This time they need to build it downtown. The King Cotton Hotel was built in 1926 and at the time was Greensboro's premier hotel. The city's conventions were held there. Over the years the building started to decay and it became a dwelling place for live in tenants like the Greensboro Motel today near Summit Ave and Lindsay Street. It was demolished in 1970 I think. But it would have been nice if the building had been preserved. But of course back in the 1970s the trend was to tear down the old and build the new. The building could have been turned into a luxury apartment complex.

The Proximity will set the tone for other Hotels who may be interested in building downtown. A boring convention Hotel with a Hilton or Sheraton name
probably makes economic sense for downtown but it does not set the area apart like The Proximity. The local developer who built this Hotel apparently knows what economic development is all about. When the "movers and shakers" come to town and have a nice experience they will tell their friends and business partners that Greensboro is a really nice place to locate a business, etc. If their wives are impressed then its a done deal.

It is a real shame that the King Cotton Hotel was torn down and replaced with the hideous News & Record building. That place ugh-lee!
