Default Are there places to rent near UNC Greensboro?

My boyfriend and I will be moving from NYC to Greensboro in August (2008) and he will be attending grad school at UNC Greensboro. We hope to live close enough to the university for him to ride his bike or walk there. Does anyone know of any nice apartments/houses for rent near the university or in a decent neighborhood near entertainment/shopping, etc that is somewhat close to the school. Thanks!

Zip codes 27403, 27408, 27401 are all good mostly (and close to UNCG). Greensboro has craigslist, so you will want to look there. A lot of the new apartments that are being built are for students and they share kitchens and bathrooms (like a dorm). I would suggest Lindley Park Manor or Latham Park Manor (real apts. w/ your own kitchen/bath). Both are next to parks, convenient to everything in town, good neighborhoods, very inexpensive and about 2 miles from UNCG.

Thanks d_random! That's really helpful. We're definitely looking for our own place and don't really want to share much, except maybe a washing machine.

There are some new student apartments on Lee Street now under construction. It appears they could be finished by August. I dont know the name of them but they border downtown.

Just pay close attention to what you are going to lease; sometimes it's easy to overlook certain aspects. For instance, I believe every apt is required to have a refrig. and dishwasher. But they may or may not have washer/dryer hookups and they may or may not have a laundry facility in the apt complex. Also some places require you to pay for parking spaces, which you should watch out for.

My boyfriend & I are thinking about attending UNCG for grad school too, but we haven't pinned down when. His dept (music) has more flexible application times than mine does (writing) which is only once a year. So he'll probably end up going first.

I wish you the best in finding places nearby, unfortunately I don't know to much about housing options down there. As for nearby entertainment, the Four Seasons Town Center (3 story mall) is about a 10 minute drive from campus, and the Friendly Shopping Center is pretty close, probably about a 5-8 minute drive in the other direction. Lots of movie theaters. Supposedly there are lots of college-aged bars/clubs on Tate & Mendenhall Sts, but we haven't been down there... not too interested in that scene. The Coliseum's very close to the campus, with the stuff you'd expect like concerts, etc. My boyfriend & I are still pretty excited at all the places left for us to explore here, since we've only been here about a month ourselves.

At any rate, welcome to Greensboro!

Apartments are not required in Greensboro to have a dishwasher. You may find that most apt complexes have them, but they are rare in single family homes. I'm not sure what is required, but you will find that at the least you get a frig and stove. That is my experience renting 15 years here.

Shoot! I meant refrig. and stove. Thanks for correcting, d_Random.

Yes, be sure to check as to whether they have a dishwasher or not. But I'm pretty sure that refrig. and stove are required... at least every single apartment I looked at online or in person had them.

Although I was quite disappointed to find out that my apartment did not have ceiling fans in any rooms or overhead lights in most rooms. Only the kitchen/dining and bathrooms had overhead lights. For the rest of the living and bedrooms I had to buy lamps.

Good luck in your search!

Check greensboro craigslist, search "UNCG", most listings will tell you how far from campus.
