Default grad student looking for a new(ish) & barrier-free apartment -- suggestions??

Hey folks,

I'm looking to begin grad school @ UNCG & need to find housing at a reasonable price (< $700-800/mo would be ideal). I use a wheelchair from a spinal cord injury, but get around most places well *without* needing the typical ADA-compliant "handicap access."

A buddy of mine lives in High Point & mentioned that some recent code requires that all 1st floor apartments be built with universal design (wide doorways, no steps, etc). This is really all I need; I'd like to look for something new/semi-new that's in a good location.

I haven't visited Greensboro yet (I live 3hrs away in Charlottesville, VA), although I've driven through before. Is there any non-student housing close to UNCG that fits what I'm looking for? Is there public transportation in the city? I can drive, but avoiding parking hassles (and silly gas prices; I drive a 13mpg Jeep) is welcome, so if there's something on a bus line that'd be cool.

Also, a view would be nice if one exists.

Thoughts? Give me names of places to look.

Please.

Thanks much,
Scott

okay, thanks.

how about a rephrased question... ignore the barrier-free stuff (this isn't that difficult to come by; it blends in unless you know what to look for):

Who knows of new/semi-new apartments w/in a reasonable distance to UNCG that are *not* specifically for students? Names would really help.

cheers,
scott

Man! I wish I could help! I'm too new to this area myself to be of any real use to you; however, I would hope the housing office at UNC-G could offer some advice in that department. The question has surely come up before. Also, if you haven't installed it yet, try uploading Google Earth (it's free) and comparing locations of apartments with the rental places online /apartment ratings sites. Some places are wise enough to list details like the ones you are searching for. The older places simply will not have those details built in unless it has been updated, which in that case I'm sure they'd advertise that much. *shrug*

Sorry I can't be of more help than that. *pout* I hope someone else who knows the area can give us a better clue. I just moved here less than 2 weeks ago! I can't wait to check out UNC-G though. What area will you be studying? I still need to take my GREs, but I was hoping to apply there for the Counseling program within the next year or so, or at least once my daughter is in school (she's 3 and soooo much like me!)

Scott-

I dunno if it will meets your specs, but I have a brand new (completed end of this month) 3BR/2BA duplex that will be available June 1st. 2 miles from UNCG. The problems I can think of is that it has a gravel driveway BUT it has a sidewalk leading to the front door. Also the hallway is kinda narrow. $750 month.

Also, here is the web site page about greensboro transportation:

Thanks Angie.

I'm not really interested in going through the housing office (or whatever UNCG calls it), although they may be able to point folks in reasonable directions. I'm 28 & simply wanting to avoid the typical student apartments. Google pulls up a handful of places spread throughout the first 4-5 search pages when looking for the terms "greensboro apartments" that I'll likely investigate later.

I'm looking into a M.S. in Parks & Recreation Management. I haven't taken the GREs yet either. Good times.

Thanks! June 1st is likely earlier than I need, but $750/mo for 3br/2ba is attractive. Hardpack gravel is no problem. Loose gravel can be a pain. Narrow hallways are typically fine, although I'd have to see firsthand. If I head down for a meeting/visit @ UNCG anytime in the next couple weeks, I may drop you a PM and see if I can take a peek at the duplex.

cheers,
scott
