Looking at relocating from Durham NC to Kernersville or Pfafftown. I am trying to determine which high school (Reagan or East Forsyth) will enable 2 African American boys to flourish socially, emotionally, and academically. I would appreciate honest feedback that will help me, an african american mother, select a high school that fosters social acceptance and good academics.

Well I live in Pfafftown and I know Reagan is supposed to be a great High school.. When we 1st moved here they were telling us that kids were dropping out of forsyth acadamies (private schools) to go to reagan.. I think your kids will do fine there!!

Thanks for the response. I want to make sure I am not putting my boys in an educational environment where they get less attention because they are the minority. I was struck by the 27 point difference in black students' test scores at Reagan in comparisons to Whites.

My suggestion would be for you to visit each school and so you can get a feel for which you like in your own opinion. Talk to the prinicples and tour the school you will only know from your own perspective than taking other peoples opinions.. I read on here where someone said Reagan is full of Rednecks that is soo not true.. go by your own judgement.. Hope this helps..

I feel Reagan High is a much better choice than East High School. My daughter is currently a senior at Reagan High and has done extremely well academically. My son is a freshman and has had a very good start so far this year, which is key for him since his last 2 yrs in middle school were challenging for him. Reagan has MANY students that elect to take AP/college level courses at Reagan, and those who do have the full support of the staff to help them succeed. I know several seniors this year that have scores high enough to and are applying to colleges such as Wake Forest, UNC Chapel Hill, UVA, and even Yale. Reagan's principal, Stan Elrod, is very committed to providing the best for his school and students and knows many of the students by name. What amazes me is that I have personally seen him at several after school functions supporting the kids after a full day's work. As for East, they are currently struggling with increasing gang activity and social issues within their student body. Although Reagan is primarily causasian, several different cultures are represented there. I can't speak for the faculty at East, but I have been very pleased with the faculty at Reagan the past three years my daughter has attended Reagan. One other difference between the two is that this is only the fourth year Reagan has been in session, as compared to East having been open for many years. I hope this helps you. I wish the best for you and your family!
Lisa

I would personally suggest either...Reagan High, RJ Reynolds High or West Forsyth...for the better high schools in Winston-Salem. Living in the western part of the city/county you will be zoned for Reagan or West Forsyth or RJ Reynolds. Can't go wrong with either one.

GOOD LUCK!

more likely to be in Mt. Tabor than Reynolds, wouldn't you? I think they're all decent high schools.

to the OP, sorry i can't help. don't know much about East.
