We just bought our first home with a septic tank. This is new to us - always been in a more metropolitan area where we were on a city sewer system. So anyway, I have a question. I was told you can't (or not suppose to) have a garbage disposal. What! I'm not sure we could live without a garbage disposal. Is this true? Do any of you that have a septic tank have a disposal?

Hi welcome to rural living.
A septic tank can be low maintenance if you follow certain changes in your lifestyle to make the system work like it should. You can get a garbage disposal but it has to be one of those that are top of the line that chews the food up into real tine particles. Food does not break down as fast as waste so it can clog your system if you do not have the proper kind install. Avoid using household cleaners that go down the water pipe due to it breaks up bacteria that your septic system needs to function correctly. Or using bleach Avoid putting any feminine hygiene products , condoms or cigarette butts down the toilet. When doing home inspection have the inspector check the system and try to get in closing costs to cover having your system pumped if you are buying a resell. A septic system for a family of four can go five years without being pumped but I have known many people who have gone alot longer. Know exactly where the septic lines are that run from the tank . You will need to know this in case you have scenario that a car needs to go up in your yard. NEVER have a car go over your system and do not plant trees near your system due to the roots can tear up the system |

Thanks sunnykayak, that is a lot of good information that I didn't know. Is your typical 1/3 horsepower Insinkerator a good enough disposal in your opinion?
