I am at my wits end with my child and this ADHD stuff, are there any good doctors you would recommend in the Winston Salem area. This is new to me and I need help to better assit my child at home and school, open to suggestions about meds, doctors and therapists who work well with ADHD kids. I am not looking for a Rx writer who does not listen to my concerns!

![]() While I don't have any personal experience with this doctor, I have read several very good reviews for her. It seems like a good place to start your search. She is actually in Greensboro, it appears that she is very good with ADHD children. This website holds a couple of those reviews, and her office contact information. ![]() Amy Stevenson - Greensboro, NC 27408 - Reviews: General Practice Physicians |

I also have a child with ADHD. I am not trying to upset you, but being the parent of a 17 year old ADHD son you have a rough road ahead. We had our son at many doctors and have tried many medications. I do not know how old your child is but as a parent you must stay on top of them with keeping organized. They tend to forget things quite easily. We had our son in small classes during most of his schooling, but found that he was seriously behind the regular classes. We have since placed him in regular classes and high school has been a real struggle. Don't know if it is true of all school in NC, but where I am now they like to place kids in regular classes with a helper in the class. This is the best way I feel. Thought we were doing the right thing having him in small classes. As far as a doctor, just monitor his medications, if you decide to go that route. Some tend to over medicate, some don't. Hopefully you will find a good one quickly. My son has been off medication for a few years but school has been a real stuggle. There are those that have ADHD and they do fine is school. Overall you going to have monitor his everday life very closely with regards to his doctor, teachers, medications, organization etc. Good luck and drop a line if you need someone who has dealt with this for a long time.

I've got one of those ADHD kids as well. One thing I learned (the hard way) is to beware of having your child diagnosed with the "diagnosis of the week" of Aspergers Syndrome. ADHD symptoms and Aspergers are very similar, and have similar treatments. However, since Aspergers falls into the autisim category it makes your child UNINSURABLE. If the doctor thinks he/she may be borderline Aspergers try to not get that on the medical record or you may be looking at $600-$700 (or more) monthly insurance premiums. |

Hi, I have a 10 yr old with ADHD. I can't help with doctors in NC since I'm not there yet, but I did want to share something with you.
I don't know how your insurance down there works, but our insurance here in NJ tried to push us to go through the "mental health" portion giving us access to only psychiatrists, which I personally wasn't too happy with. They only seemed to want to immediately prescribe meds and that was it. I did some research and managed to find a pediatrician within my plan that specialized in "neurological development". I feel she gave a much more "well rounded" approach to my son's problem. She requested a lot teacher input, assisted with 504 plan suggestions, gave us diet changes and gave us many suggestions on helping us as a family deal with the situation. My insurance did balk at paying for the visit where he was actually diagnosed, something to do with the office using a "mental health code" in the billing, but they have paid for all the other visits since on paper she is simply a pediatrician prescribing meds. ADHD is not a easy "prescribe a med and all is well" situation and it is easy to let it affect your entire family life. Take a deep breath and just try to be patient. You will eventually find the right doctor. When we first started dealing with this, I found that doing a lot of research on the net and getting ideas on how other families have dealth with the situation helped tremendously. I wish you, your ADHD child and the rest of your family the best. Rachael |
