Career Center on Miller Street?
My husband is looking at a teaching position at the Career Center on Miller Street in W-S. We are from the Charlotte area and would be relocating. Can anyone give some info on this area? Safe?, Areas for building a home? Shopping etc... any info at all to help paint a picture for me would be much appreciated.

The neighborhoold surrounding that area is called Ardmore. It is an older, well established neighborhood and I would consider it safe. That neighborhood usually has medical residents buying homes then selling them a few years later since it is next to the WFUBMedical Center.
If you were wanting to build, you would probably have to look outside WS, into the county for neighborhoods with lots. If you wanted land to build on, you may have to look out even farther to other counties.
Shopping you have Thruway Center which is close to Ardmore and Hanes Mall. I prefer shopping in Charlotte myself. (I heard Trader Joe's is coming to Thruway sometime soon.)
Not really much upscale shopping, imo. I'm not a ritzy shopper by any means, but I like what the buyer's for Belk in Charlotte choose much more than what is chosen at Hanes Mall.
hth.

Welcome to W-S. Have many good memories of Career Center from high school!
Flipster is correct on Ardmore neighborhood. Hanes Mall and Stratford Rd. area is approx. 1-1.5 miles to the west from CC. Biggest commerical area in Winston. More commerical areas and restaurants to immediate east of CC, but not as nice.
For housing British Woods is well-established (approx. 20-30 years old) subdivison immediately adjacent to CC property. It is well kept up and lots of established families and older adults in this area. Nice park (Bolton) close by with public pool. Great area for walking, etc in neighborhood and not a lot of traffic off of main streets in 6-8 block radius.
If you are looking for more contemporary homes and subdivisions, go south down Ebert Road (runs by CC property). More typical subdivisions within 5-10 minute drive.
If wanting to build, also recommend looking in southern Forsyth or northern Davidson. I am looking for land too, really only good chance of finding 1+ acres is in Davidson. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Avoid 27101 and 27105 zip codes.
27107 can be iffy.
27106, 27103, 27127 ( these are the best)
I'm actually moving to charlotte and selling a home from 27127
Shopping everything is on Hanes Mall Blvd.

miller street
Miller street is close to the Hanes Mall area, the houses there are mainly older homes, but there is a lot of other homes that are very nice. It is usually a quite area and there is a park near by. You could look for housing in Clemmons, Country Club Rd., Robinhood, and other areas that are close by to this street. Hope this helps, let me know if I can be of any more assistance. Jane

Thanks
Thank you to everyone for the info so far. More help needed. We don't neccessarily need to be real close to the school. I also have an 11 and 13 year that will be going into 6th and 8th grade and would like to know which school district is good. I know it was mentioned that to get some land (acre or more) to look to Davidson county, how far is that from the career center and how are the schools and taxes there compared to Forsyth Co.?

Check other threads about NDavidson area, but you would be as close or closer to the Career Center than Clemmons, taxes are less than Forsyth, schools are equal. Since your children will be in middle school, you don't have to think about which elem school district you will be living. As far as high schools go, if your children will go to college, look at the high schools that offer the most AP courses.
I've lived in ND for 23 yrs/WS for 27 yrs and am very familiar with the areas you mention.

For Forsyth county, aren't most of of the AP courses taught at the Career Center? Maybe that's changed since I went there...

Hmpf! I take exception to some of this generalization. I've lived in 27101 (on the south edge of downtown near Old Salem) for 10 years and LOVE it. However, in context of the OP's needs (school age children), no, 27101 isn't the best option. One of the best (affluent) zip codes was omitted - 27104.
I guess everyone has different likes and dislikes, but I avoid Hanes Mall Blvd every chance I get. I much prefer shopping at Thruway. If I need to go to Lowe's or Wal Mart, the new ones on Peter's Creek Parkway are much more convenient with much easier traffic.
