Default mother in law suites

Has anyone ever added on to their house for this reason? If so can you tell me your experience and estimated cost? Or are there any houses out there with the MIL suites for sale? I have been searching and I can't find any in WS or Greensboro. Thanks!

We finished our basement to turn it into a mother-in-law suite. We ended up with additional 1000 sq ft to the house. We had a full bath, bedroom, and living area. We also finished our ceilings instead of having a drop down ceiling and we had to add an additional air unit for that level. It cost us around $35000 to $40000 to finish it.

I would build one of these and put it in your back yard:
Lowe's Home Improvement :: The Katrina Cottage

I've seen them called so many things (we call them "granny flats" here), but on realtor.com you can search for 'multi-family units', which will include for instance: a house with a single apartment inside it, or a house with an apartment over the garage, or a house converted to apartments, or a pair of townhouses together, that sort of thing.

We have stone buildings on our farm, including a stable and a woodshed, and we wanted to convert one to a studio apartment for our oldest daughter. The builder came out and suggested -- strongly-- that we just leave it be and build a cottage such as d_Random linked to: easier and cheaper, he said, but the cottages start at about 10K once you've included electric and a bathroom, and furnishing. Still, an extension would cost us about 30K. (yikes!)

If you can find a house already set up, that's definitely the easier, and in this market probably cheaper, option. Good luck finding it!
