That's the reason I asked enlightenme why he/she was speaking on your behalf. I have read back through each of your posts, and I have not found anything that sounds even close to "you're right and I'm wrong. High Point is a charming town with exceptional public schools". If you said it aloud I couldn't hear you...
I wouldn't go into all that "charming with exceptional schools" business. It's as far fetched as the other end of the spectrum, as in "very large lower class, horrible schools, unusually large areas of poverty". There is some middle ground between your two descriptions, although I realize the most recent one was total sarcasm. I'm sure if I showed you Beverly Hills located in High Point city limits you would continue to stick with your original assessment. Do you gain something from bad-mouthing High Point? Or are you trying to steer people away from it and promoting a different city? I'm just trying to figure out why it's so important for you to trash the city of High Point...

Well I'm back!! I made my trip to High Point, walked around the city (even in run down areas...by my self!!) and I survived. The guy that I saw circling the block after getting off the bus didn't even bother me, or try to snatch my purse. He was actually pretty helpful. Imagine that.
Anyway thanks everyone for the information on High Point. It's always nice to get someone elses take/experience on a situation. Sometimes it's just best to experience things for self, rather than to take another man's word for it.

North High Point
My family is also relocating to HP this summer, North HP, more specifically. The school district is so far so good (SW Guilford Elementary), but, as JAS mentioned before, I am not sure what happens next year. It seems that a lot of rezoning occurs throughout NC because of people from everywhere.

I work smack-dab-in-the-middle of High Point. The city proper is rather depressing and filled with "street people" always asking for "bus money". The city is more-or-less abandoned all but 2 weeks out of the year. It reminds me of some post apocolyptic city from a moive, all empty with a few lone survivors left scrounging around for food (and drugs).
When you come visit, check out the downtown area. Walk down main street. Drive down Green Street.
Then go into Greensboro. Walk down Elm Street (this is more-or-less the "Main Street" of Greensboro).
Compare the coffee shops/bars in both cities. You'll most likeley find run-down lucky-to-get-out-alive bars in High Point and yuppie college bars in Greensboro.
yeah, there are nice area of High Point, and bad areas of Greensboro, but when people discuss a city, they usally refer to the down town area. Maybe there sould be an official "bums per square foot" rating or some such...

Well, this is the Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point forum, which covers towns that are in the upper middle of the state. So most of us here are about 3 hours or so from the beach. There are plenty of lakes for fishing though.
If you have a tree service company you may do well here. We have plenty of trees here. You should be able to do a good amout of business here if you can keep your prices competitive. I myself have 4 trees that need to be taken down on my property.
This area used to be a big textile area, but alot of that has moved offshore, so there are fewer textile companies nowdays. But, you'll still probably find more textile jobs here than other parts of the country.

Let's remember, High Point is a small "city" outside Greensboro and Winston Salem. Ideally, live in North High Point. It is highly convenient to everything. Downtown, even the Emorywood subdivision and High Point Country Club, are less desirable in my opinion. You have to travel to get convenience. Downtown, all 10 blocks of it, is impoverished unless it involves furniture market. Aren't all downtown cities somewhat? Northern HPT is the place to live. Lots of new industry moving in, making shopping an eventual option, too. The WEndover Ave. corridor that connects HPT to Greensboro, onlyl takes about 3-4 miles to get you everything, including I85, I40, 311, etc. Lots more home for the money, lots more land when you do buy. We have lived in or around HPT for 23 years. Moving back to Raleigh for work. BIG difference. You'll enjoy less traffic, better road design, and a laid back lifestyle. Give it a try.

If you can't ideally live in North High Point, what other areas would be good? I will be working in Thomasville and don't want to commute too long. The school is close to I-85 so I will have highway access.

A lot of the negativity that High Point receives is because you most people use personal experiences. It is a nice place for a short time visit. If you are looking for entertainment you are not going to find it here. People who live here are very use to the good old boy system. Which sometimes works but is not always at best interest to everyone. I have lived here for several years and I ask myself why I am still here.
Depending on who speaks about High Point some may say it's great and some my say it's not. The repetition that High Point has come to have is nothing that the citizens are doing it is the small Monopoly government in place that makes it a problem. Everyone will have their own opinion but you don't know what your missing until you try something different.
I personally feel that everything in High Point is wrong but that is my opinion. The school systems are bad unless you live in certain areas of High Point. As far as crime you have that every where. Unfortunately, I believe that people in High Point rely on the memory of scriptures in the bible and try to punish you for want you don't know. They also make a lot of judgement because that is they an individual is suppose to act. (so they say)
High Point is a place that is not ready for change if you are coming to try an make change you will be very unsuccessful. Their famous saying here is "We have always did it like that". Unfortunately, people who have not experienced anything else but High Point can not and will not except change. If that's the kind of place you like you will love High Point.
