Burlington NC relocation and salary questions
My husband and I are considering a move to Burlington, NC or nearby, close enough to the Greensboro or Raleigh/Durham metro areas to commute to work. We are mid thirties, middle class looking for areas with a similar demographic (thug and gang free local). Any suggestions? We intend to rent for one year to get a feel for the area and then would like to build or buy a mid sized home on several acres of land in a very or at least fairly rural area. Looking to spend in the ballpark of $150K. Is this realistic if willing to commute an hour or so to work in Greensboro (most likely) or Durham area? If so, what areas may be worth consideration? I am in inside advertising sales in a CA now and am tired of big city life, but am looking to find a base + commission compensation of $75K plus, which is competitive to my current comp plan adjusted for cost of living differences. I would love to hear from sales execs in the area to see if this is a realistic earning potential in either the Greensboro or Raleigh/Durham area.
Thanks much for any insight!!

well i cant help you with salary, but i can tell you that the burlington, graham, mebane area are 30 minutes from certain parts of Greensboro and 30 minutes from certain parts of Durham. so if you want something close enough for a bearable commute where you can still get some land, this is where i would look. the pricetag may need to be raised a little though.

You may find what you're looking for in either the Haw River (south of GSO on I-85) if you find work in GSO or, Efland or Hillsborough if working in the Raleigh/Durham area, for house and land the 150 range would be do-able, multiple acres are quite possible. Either of the areas has easy interstate access for commuting but far enough out to not have a number of the urban ills. This section of the state is fairly well educated, proximity to UNC, Duke, NCState, Wake Forest et al.

Thanks
Thanks for the input! Well, salary isn't as much of an issue anymore. Broke the news at the office and my employer offered me a work at home scenario, so we are NC bound at the end of October Now just have to decide where to rent a house--not apartment--for a few months in the general area between Greensboro and Durham so we can get the lay of land before becoming homeowners again. Can't wait!!! Any ideas on good sites to check out to find homes for rent?

Welcome to B'Town. You shouldn't have any problem finding a nice rental house. Just keep a check on the newspaper and Craig's List. I recommend the West Burlington/ Elon area. It's near the interstate and the new shopping centers.
