Default Moving to Winston-Salem

I am moving from Tucson, AZ to Winston-Salem, where my husband lives. He works at the Wake-Forest medical center, which looks pretty close to the downtown area. I was wondering if it's a good place to live for a professional couple with no kids. We are interested in apartments to rent in buildings like nissen or communities like Crowne Partners. Any advice?

I haven't lived in W-S for a few years, but I keep up with development and news thru this site:

West End is probably a good option for you since the hospital compound is in or right on the edge of it. It is a good sized area and is really beautiful and historic, which means it's popular. Rentals are readily available in W. End and there are a couple of shiny new developments under construction that may be finished soon enough for you. The Nissen Building is hot! I was thinking of moving back to W-S (my place of birth) back in the summer and looked at some apts in the Nissen. It felt like a bldg in a bigger city...and so much cheaper than a highrise in Atlanta! So check on that site I sent you and see what comes up.

Here is a thread on Urban Planet that's all about West End. The
pictures are really beautiful and it has information also. You'll want to live there when you see the gorgeous victorian and queen anne architecture. You might need to set up a name and password on Urban Planet but it just takes a second. Check it out...

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (called Baptist Hospital by locals) is in a unique position. You are within short driving distance of very expensive and very poor neighborhoods and everything in between. The area is growing and there is an emphasis on art and theater more than family oriented things to do. Baptist is very close to downtown which has nice restaurants, a school of the arts, museums and theaters.
