I will be going on an interview in Greensboro next week so I started reading this site to get a feel for the area. After scanning the posts, I don't see much being said on why the Greenboro area would be any better to live in than any other. My wife and I are late 40's and empty nesters, well almost, the son will still be at home during the summers while school is out.
I guess my point is what does everyone do day to day? I feel that the quality of life is impacted more by the things you do day to day rather than the occasional day trip. For example, the beach is 1-1/2 hours away, but how many times are you really going to drive that, compared to something that is closer to home. I know when our kids were younger our time was taken up with them and their activities, but now our time has freed up.
I guess I have compared this area to middle Tennessee. There I can see myself golfing because the courses are close and green fees are reasonable. There are also a couple of large lakes within an hour for boating or fishing.
Greensboro has the moutains pretty close by but we don't ski, hike or moutain bike. So after the first few rides through to take in the beauty, I don't see us using them much.
Would the Greenboro area offer us a good life or just a pleasent place to live without much to do?
Well, Greensboro is a family/college mix of a town.
I am not into the nightlife or club scene, but I have heard that Greensboro has a good nightlife downtown.
I am more into the parks/recreation. There is Celebration Station and Emerald Pointe Water Park. Greensboro has some great parks and gardens........Bog Garden, Bicentennial Park, Guilford Courthouse Military Park, Arboretum, etc. Greensboro is also known for golfing.
Greensboro is more like 4+ hours from the coast/Outer Banks; 2+ hours from the mountains.
I think Greensboro is a pleasant place to live with some things to do.
I am not crazy about the bad traffic along Wendover and Battleground Avenues, but overall it is a nice city and a good place to live.

I agree the traffic isn't that great, but the parks are nice from what I understand. We don't live in Greensboro, but visit there occassionaly for day trips. The science center is nice and well worth a visit.
People in Greensboro tend to cluster around organizations and activities that they have in common. Neighbors have community activities, especially in summer and at Christmas. There are a lot of activities at the Coliseum and Auditorium - athletic, musical, dramatic, and college commencements; we have a baseball team, all the colleges have some sort of athletic teams - UNCG and Bennett do not have football teams, but all others do; there are cultural activies such as dramatic and musical productions at the Carolina Theater and at the colleges and universities; the Eastern Music Festival is held every summer at Guilford College, and during this year there will be a lot of activities in connection with the Bicentennial celebration. There are plenty of churches and other faith based organizations. People living here are very loyal supporters of their alma maters, if they attended college here. If you like antiques, which I don't, there are a number of antique shops on the south end of Elm Street. There are clubs and organizations, sororities and fraternities, masonic organizations several very nice tennis courts, YMCA branches with outstanding facilties and equipment, and there are a number of floral gardens. Neighbors will be your first lonme of contact until you can find yourself around
OK, you mentioned what you don't like to do, what DO you like to do with your free time?

I am not in your place in life, but I personally find this area to be "just a pleasent place to live without much to do." I am not unhappy here, but I haven't really found anything that feels absolutely fabulous or amazing. It is good enough and whenever I feel a bit homesick I remind myself there are plenty of worse places to be....With that said, I also think you can make lemonade out of lemons (whatever that expression is!) and make any place feel like home and a good place to settle down. I am pretty sure we aren't going anywhere and I am okay with that (most days) and the Triad is close enough to other areas when you need a bit of excitement. Good luck!
