Exclamation about WS/Forsyth County Schools

I have had children in the WS/Forsyth County School system for the past 12 years.

Beware that in grades 2-5, kids are given grades based on their teachers perception of their "improvement". The county policy states clearly that it is not to be determined only from an average of grades. It is a teacher's perception of progress.

This means your child can make straight A's all year and fail the EOG!!! Your child's report card can appear to be wonderful but they are actually BELOW GRADE LEVEl!!!

There is no formula for parents or teachers to follow. It is all in perception.

This is the only county in the Triad that has this grading policy. RUN to another county! Or run to a private school and skip the school system's continued deception to students and parents of Forsyth County.

I don't see that in their school policy.

And as for the EOG, this happens in all counties. The teachers aren't told what's going to be on the EOG test so they have no way in knowing how to prepare the students.

me either..and I had posted previously on another thread that my daughter just grad. HS from a WSFC school, and had no problem getting into the University she wanted.she really excelled in math,chemistry/ science, and took AP courses, inc. foreign languages, and this is really going to be an asset to her, since she wants to be a Pharmacist.she's taking calculus I (among other courses of course) this semester at college, and doing just great.no complaints here (or from her!).
and my son is just the same,in HS now, and has been taking AP classes, inc. trig and calculus, foreign languages, etc.,in a wsfc school.I can't say I can take any credit for that....I can't stand math! LOL.and I don't know any foreign languages nor any advanced science or chemistry.this is a testament to them and to the schools they've been to,for all the hard work they do (themselves and the teachers),and for the teachers caring enough to help them get where they are now.

How could you possibly make such an irresponsible statement?

The EOG's are based on the Objectives from the NC Standard Course of Study. The EOG's follow VERY CLOSELY the objectives, if the teacher is teaching the Standard Course of Study, the teacher is preparing the children for the EOG's. The NC Standard Course of Study can be found here:

Exclamation I have been wondering for awhile.....

I have been hearing more about this issue. Especially, since that is the only thing holding my daughter back, not a first time, but yet a second time. My daughter is smart. She struggles in certain areas of academics, as most children do at some point. I feel the EOG's is so important to the school than to the students because my daughter's about average until she tests for the EOG's. They will allow retesting and free tutoring to show their results as being successful and above average. I have learned that this desire is because that is how they get more funding and have to prove, by results, their achievements. However, they are actually leaving children behind and because of their requirement of red tape in order to continue the supply.

Anyhow, thank you for your post as I have felt alone in what I personally am acknowledging in our public school system (in Forsyth County).
