I am from Greensboro and lived there for 22 years and attend college there. There are very little industry and a lot of service and education jobs. Greensboro is a big college town. There are 6 colleges and universities alone in the city limits plus there are a lot of upscale neighbor hoods with nice homes. Greensboro is like a big neighborhood with a lot of trees.
Greensboro is also a better choice for family minded people. Raleigh has high crime and outrageous cost of living. Plus Greensboro has a more southern feel then Raliegh. Greensboro shopping is just as good as Raleigh. We have several new outdoor malls with top class stores and a indoor mall. It’s not a store in Raleigh that Greensboro doesn't have. In addition, we have malls in neighboring cities like High Point and Winston Salem which are minutes away.

Greensboro has no area even remotely close to the high paying, white collar jobs found in Reasearch Triangle Park for example. Just recently 2 huge companies (Fidelity and Credit Suisse First Boston) announced major relocations (5000 jobs in Fidelity's case) going to the area. I don't see those same type of announcements about Greensboro. When I said Greensboro is "blue collar" maybe that was a bad term as what I meant was Raleigh is "prettier" and more yuppie as one poster indicated.
I also disagree on the shopping. Friendly Center, Hanes Mall, or Four Seasons just don't compare to what Raleigh/Durham has. Greensboro does not have stores like Nordstrom, etc.
I agree the cost of living is higher but I don't know about the crime stats. I could see some parts of Raleigh having higher crime stats but Raleigh also has much nicer areas than Greensboro. So in my opinion, in the areas that I frequented in both cities, Raleigh is much better.
