Does anyone know about VITA tax preparation locations in the Greensboro area? VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. I think it's usually local universities and non-profits that offer free tax prep to people that make under $40,000 per year. I haven't been able to find much detail on whether this is offered in Greensboro/Guilford Co., and if so, who does it.

Any help is appreciated!

I'm not sure if there are any around here, but I did find this site, which gives a number to call for locations.

I called the number on the IRS site, and ended up in a big, button pressing, automated voice phone loop from hell. It seems like the VITA prep is locally organized using volunteers, so it's been a bit hard to piece together who is offering the service and when.

Default VITA Free Tax Preparation

I'm aware of 2 VITA sites in High Point that will be providing free tax preparation. 1) Weed & Seed Community Development, 401 Fourth Street, 2) Macedonia Family Resource Center on Lake Avenue

When we lived in NC (up to 2 yrs ago), IRS had a big office in downtown Greensboro. You could always check with them; a friend of mine retired from that office and IRS used to maintain a list.

Also, check with S.C.O.R.E., which is an organization of retired folks volunteering for many different things. They may be doing something, at several locations around town.

Last but not least, check local churches. I knew of quite a few that offered this service, at least to the members of the church.

Have you considered preparing your own taxes online? We have been doing that for years, and we never had a problem. IRS' website has links to programs available free, with no filing fees for electronic filing. At least for the federal; most sites charge a fee for the state e-file.

Good luck! Mary

I second this. SECU is a great resource! Love my credit union, though levels of service do seem to vary from branch to branch...
