Folks, the purchase price of a dog is the least of its cost, unless you don't intend to be a responsible pet person. Spay/neuter, yearly exam and vax, heartworm pills (usually advised by a vet to be administered year-round), flea/tick treatments (this year is expected to be a bad bug year because of the mild winter), a nutritious diet ...

I would seriously reconsider a pet if you start out with a "as cheap as possible" attitude. A better idea would be to see if your kids can volunteer for an hour or two a week at a no-kill shelter. It will give them exposure to a variety of animals, teach them responsible pet care, and save you the expense of a pet until a time you know you can really afford it - and give you time to find out if it's something you really want to take on.

Good point silverwing. Perhaps the posters know the cost of having a pet, but you are wise to remind us, just in case.

I just tried to renew my collie's Interceptor (heartworm prevention) prescription. Apparently the Novartis plant that makes Sentinal and Interceptor is no longer operating. There is no date known - yet - for its reopening. So, I have to find another heartworm prevention. Looks like it will have to be Trifexis, which costs $106 for a six month supply. Certain breeds, such as Collies cannot take Ivermectin, which is somewhat cheaper.

I spend about $400 to $500 per year at the vet. caring for a healthy dog. Flea/tick, heartworm and mosquito disease protection, annual blood and fecal tests, vaccines and a healthy exam, etc. Heaven forbid the costs involved when the dog is actually sick. Dog food is an additional $300 per year. This does not include the costs for collars, leashes, toys, etc.

I would love to adopt another collie, but I simply cannot afford it ! Sad.

Best to be prepared for the cost of a pet. Much as they can bring so much joy and love, they don't come cheap.

Not to mention that a "cheap" dog is not necessarily going to be a healthy one. Some puppy mill owners will let an out-bred dog go for cheap (or usually just dump it at the animal shelter). Some folks who want to get rid of a poorly chosen pet, but wish to recoup some of their cost, will sell them.

Overall, looking for a "cheap" pet is not a responsible start. Too often, they end up with the despairing end I saw just two days ago. I was way out in the country, doing genealogy work in a cemetery. A very pretty black 'n white pupster kept approaching, yet shying away when I called it. I asked a groundskeeper who was mowing if he knew who the dog belonged to. He replied that, as best he knew, it was one that had been dumped. Since I couldn't get it to come to me, I was resigned to just laying out a small pile of snackies I had brought along and wished the poor thing well. The county where I was doing research has been blasted in the past for poor treatment of strays, which is why I had hoped to try and collect him. Going along that route on my return home, I saw a mangled, bloody, black and white mess in the road. It was the shy dog. Breaks my heart to see dogs come to an end like that. The people who refuse to be responsible for their animals deserve a special place in hell

Yes. Lax packaging allegations has caused a shortage. I'm afraid we cleared out our vet of the pre-shortage doses since we buy a year's worth for each of our five dogs (that was a $$ owie ).

You don't know how many times I saw that in the place we used to live (not in N.C.). Sadly, I lived in a very touristic region and it had a sad reputation for amassing a huge number of stray dogs from mid-August to October. It seems a lot of families would come to the region on vacation, bring their dogs and then dump them there upon departure. There were many newspaper articles on the subject. I lived there for 12 years and I saw it every year. So sad. Most of them ended up dead on the side of the road or put down at kill shelters. Awful !!

I remember one German Shepard that was wandering alongside a major four way road, a gorgeous dog. I knew he was lost, but traffic was awful and I could not stop to try to put him in my car. I did not see him on my route back, but I fear he must have gotten run over....

Definitely don't take a pet until you (and your entire family) are totally sure you're ready for the responsibility.

As to Interceptor, yes I called Novartis to find out exactly why they had to shut down... They did tell me the truth. I normally buy six months supply and I ran out at the end of April. By then, all the local vets were out of their supply... So, I have to switch my dog to a new drug. I hate that !
