My house is 2 years old. Do I need my HVAC system checked/serviced at this time? Is it something I should be doing twice a year? Once a year? Do you know of good reasonably-priced HVAC specialists in Winston & GSO?

Change the filter(s) every 3-6 months and oil the air handlers' motor (if the motor's bearings are not sealed) once a year.

In W-S I suggest Piedmont Sheet Metal as a very reputable and fair HVAC contractor/supplier.

Hi kootr!

Thanks for the reply. I do change the air intake filters every 3 months. OK here's the big question: how can I easily find the air handler's motor? Do I turn off the HVAC system at the wall control AND then at the circuit board before messing with it?

You should have a service disconnect switch within a few feet of the air handler. If you'll turn your fan switch on the thermostat to "On" the air handler's fan will run - then you can turn off the service disconnect switch and confirm the fan has been turned off.

The air handler's fan motor will be accessible probably through a removable door. You may be able to locate it from the filter compartment. Some of these motors are sealed and cannot be oiled, and others have an oil well with a little hinged cap on them.

You may want to have the system serviced since it is two years old, and watch what the service tech does. Ask him about oiling the motor and he'll gladly show you where it is and how to do it. Once you know, you can do it yourself. Also, if you have the system serviced you'll know that everything is in good operating order, which will make you feel good...and will probably remain in good operating order for many years without further service - except for filter changes and possibly oiling the air handing motor.

Oiling every years is a bit much. Most new motors are completely sealed but if you still have one that isn't and does require oiling. You to 20 weight non detergent oil and the intervals should be closer to 5 years. The required frequency is on the motor itself or can be found in the owners manual.

OP: The main thing you want to do is make sure your systems coils are clean. Inside the filter help keeps that coil clean but outside a lot of times grass and other debris get's built up in the coil making it less and less efficient. Keep the outside unit washed down thoroughly for the best performance. 1 week or 3 years however many times it takes to keep it clean.

If you are in Greensboro I recommend Carolina Quality Heating & Air. Thorough & honest and they also offer a service that covers twice yearly service visits as well as emergency calls.
