I'll be driving from Winston Salem to Boone next weekend. Any interesting points in that stretch? Looking at the goole map it appears to be in the middle of no man's land. Are there any mountain passes along the way?

Any tips or pointers are greatly appreciated.

Get up before dawn and take Hwy 22 to Sparta. As you ascend through the mountains you will come up to an overlook on the left. I can't give you pinpoint markers other than its quite open. If you are able to locate it pull in and watch the sunrise....... spectacular.

There are several wineries along the way. The most convenient ones to your route are in Yadkin and Wilkes counties. The exits are marked well on US 421. Here is some great information: Yadkin Valley Wineries

The closest thing to a mountain pass is the stretch of US 421 leading up to Deep Gap. There's a beautiful view to the west/southwest looking toward Lenoir just before you get to the Blue Ridge Parkway bridge. If you want to take a relatively short detour, you could take the Parkway from US 421 south to US 321 and come into Boone from that direction. There are some spectacular overlooks along that stretch, and it's only 20-25 miles extra.

Imo,not really..the above posts sound interesting,though.
we take our daughter to and from college there all the time.(when she doesn't want to ride the PARTS bus;it's a good deal, though, for students),for about the zillionth trip so far (I wish she'd just went to UNC-G instead,lol)..I usually fall asleep. It's nice scenery on a clear day though.Doesn't seem to be much bet. here n there, other than Wilkesboro n the strip of restaurants there.
I need to make a detour and go to Shatley Springs sometime though (not to be confused with nearby Glendale Springs). We ate there many yrs ago and it was really good (southern style homecooking). They have a website, you can google it.You can also stay in cabins there.
