Looking for an older "rambler" style home in quiet, safe neighborhood
I am retiring and looking at NC, after spending the last 13 years overseas. I had thought about settling on the coast, but my wife and I were there this summer and the charm has gone from my earlier days in NC (1960s).
Are there many older, safe neighborhoods/zipcodes that feature well-maintained rambler-style (one-story) homes? Does the Ardmore area still fit that bill? I want to stay under $200,000.
Thanks.

In this area, the "rambler" style home is referred to as a Ranch home, and there are lots of homes in great areas in Greensboro. Starmount, Hamilton Lakes, Hamilton Hills, even Sunset Hills have them, and all of these neighborhoods are older and established. As far as zip codes go, try 27410 or 27403.
Good luck!

Thanks. I guess this particular neighborhood varies a lot.

Ardmore is still a great neighborhood. I don't think of it so much for ranch-style homes... more for bungalows that are 2 story or story and a half. Of course there are some one story homes as well. Because of its proximity to NC Baptist Hospital and WFU School of Medicine, Ardmore will always retain its attraction and value.

I must admit, I have wondered what it would be like to live alone as an old, single man way out in the country, especially after spending 1/3 of my life in Denmark (and 2/3 in the US).
I don't think I could do it.
If I were young...well, I did do that.
Good luck.

Hi, I found your post most interesting for a reverse reason of why you wrote to the forum. I am planning on moving to DENMARK myself in the near future and would love any insight YOU could offer! I was just there in March and learned so many fascinating things....The most interesting being that babies sleep outside!
Any insights you can grant would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I agree with poster who stated that Hamilton Hills, Starmount etc offer great ranch style homes but I suggest you also look at Lindley Park subdivision and maybe the southeast part of Guilford County or look into Browns Summit. Btw, all these locations are in the Greensboro area so not sure if you have Winston already decided in your mind since you mentioned Ardmore.

I don't know if you have found what you are looking ofr yet - but if not, you might consider Cedarwood in Jmaestown. Jamestown is a wonderful community, and Cedarwood offers older, ranch style homes is a great neighborhood.

Well, on weekends last summer in Mount Airy there was a concert almost every Friday. Most of them featured Carolina Beach music that you probably danced to back in the 60's!
