This is a big factor in my picking an area to live in having lived in Florida for 25 years and seeing the way the state allows them to operate worst than any government. They control things from what shade of paint your house has to be to not allowing little landscaping statues to having to get permission first to do any landscaping including planting flowers. I don't want to move into one of these developements that are run by the Gestapo or have to pay monthly maintenance fees and are at their mercy for any increases.

The majority of new subdivisions today do have HOA rules. There are some older neighborhoods that probably don't have the rules, but the way the new subdivisions are developed, I would not want to buy a house that close to another house unless there were guidelines and HOA. It only protects your value in the long run.

We are looking for input from other transplants (locals welcome too!!!) on the shopping, dining out options, "things to do", places to live -- we have a 4 y/o daughter, my wife stays homes and we enjoy going out on Saturdays for fun . We did some research, and there does not seem to be a lot of quality shopping (staples such as Nordstrom or Trader Joes are either in Chapel Hill or Charlotte) -- we'd like to find an area with good schools, amenities (shopping, dining -- not chains), parks, etc. We'd be looking in the 600k range and working in Winston-Salem. I have read some threads on here regarding WS, and it seems like it is luke warm...not as strong of an endorsement as we saw with Raleigh or Charlotte.
We are open to living anywhere, and understand the "give and take" when living is large or small areas -- there is good and bad in everything. Thanks in advance...

I really dont know Greensboro, but I can say that since we moved to W-S in Sept, we have been very happy. There are many nice neighborhoods here and we love the house/area where we live. Meeting people is challenge but I believe it has less to do with the area and more to do with it just being difficult to meet new people anywhere one relocates to. My wife in particular was somewhat concerned about moving here. She's originally from PA but moved to Northern California 4 years ago and fell in love with the area. She really really likes it here. We like to do various outdoor activities and she totally enjoyed visiting Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock and Chimney Rock in Asheville....so did I actually.

North Carolina has NO real cities, public transport sucks, night life sucks, it all sucks, stay away. The "cities" in NC are condensed rural living, it's ridiculous, messy, and inefficient!

Well that's constructive criticism. I guess you've lived everywhere in North Carolina so that qualifies your arguement. Thank you for the valuable input.

That's nice and objective, as well as helpful. NOT.
Try again. I've actually traveled the state and know this statement to be false.

I agree, say what you want, but NC continues to be one of the fastest growing states in the country. I wonder where LadyCandy lives???

As they say, small world. We currently live in Troy and are looking at relocating to WS no later than Nov. I attended Forsyth Comm. College so knew the area about 25 years ago. Looking forward to moving back.

Hi, everyone. My husband and I are planning to move to River Chase a suburb of Winston-Salem in November. Can anyone tell me anything about this area or any area around Winston-Salem?
