Hello! We are beginning to look at cities in NC and are hoping to move somewhere smaller but with a decent live music scene (acoustic guitar/singer/songwriter type stuff). We were thinking Greensboro might, since there are a few colleges nearby. Can anyone provide feedback on this? We're also into camping, hiking, mountain biking....is this do-able around Greensboro?

Thanks!

Tate St. used to be the area for that sort of thing, had a whole lot of really good musicians, some have moved on to Nashville and are doing studio work. I would wait until the next street festival in Downtown GSO, attend and ask the bands where they normally play, there was a really (I started to say nice place, actually it was a dive, but had really good blues and jazz musicians in and out on a regular basis) I forget the name, if it shows back up in my brain I will re-post, was south a bit of town, bad neighborhood, really good music. Never heard of any patrons getting mugged, or anything else, just looked kinda rough.

I'd say the scene is decent but not great. Most bars are more dj/cover band leaning, but you'll find some acoustic stuff at cafes & coffee shops. dotmatrixproject.com may offer a little insight. Some pretty decent recreational trails on the north side of town, but more commuter oriented trails are still a few years away.

I'd say Greensboro is definitely worth an investigative trip. Stop by the Green Bean & Cycles de Oro and ask around. May also want to look at Asheville or the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area.

Thanks for the info! We love dives, so long as they're safe. My husband just loves to play and wants to be able to find people to jam with. It's not a cover band situation, though....he writes all his own stuff. We've definitely got plenty of time to weigh our options. And, as far as crime and whatnot...we currently live in the middle of Baltimore City, so pretty much anything is better than that. Ha!In reference to the mountian biking....we're definitely more into rough terrain than we are in to commuter trails, gravel, or flat trails. So, maybe the north side of town is worth taking a look. You mentioned Asheville.....what is the job market like out there? Anyone know? Thanks again for your help!

Can't speak on the Asheville job market, we just go once or twice a year to get away. That is one of the nice things about Greensboro; good for weekend trips with the mountains & coast just a few hours away, plus Raleigh & Charlotte within 90 miles for major concerts & pro sports.
