So, I got a ticket the other day, because I've lived in NC for too long without getting my car registered in the state. The reason that I haven't got it registered is that I have a crack in my windshield, and I don't have the money to get it replaced (it's too long of a crack to fix). Does anyone know of a shop that might "look the other way" in this regard? I have a court date in June, and need to get this done quick. Thanks!

Well, if I owned an inspection shop and was willing to look the other way, I surely wouldn't want anyone posting that information on a message board!

My advice would be to first determine if your car will pass. A cracked windshield may or may not be a problem--depends on where it is and how long it is. Take it to an inspection shop, and point it out up front so they can tell you before they actually do the inspection. If they tell you it won't pass, you can try your luck at other shops, but these days it's harder to find places that will look the other way. That's because they are subject to stiff fines for doing that, and they don't make much money on inspections in the first place. It's just not worth it to them to take that risk.

The car should fail inspection only if the crack in the windshield impairs the driver's vision.
