I am looking for information about a murder in Winston-Salem that occurred in the 60's. I think a doctor pushed his wife down the stairs. Tried googling but that didn't help.

Any more details? That is pretty slim even for true-crime folks.

Yes, more details. So far all I can come up with is the 2001 Peterson case in Durham. He killed his wife by pushing her down the stair but he was a novelist and sometimes politician.

I think you are referring to the Robert E. Porth murder case on Phillips Bridge Road off Country Club Road (Coordinates: 365'10"N 8022'0"W) on the west side of Winston-Salem back in 1966. (Back in the mid 1960s Phillips Bridge Road may not have been inside the city limits of W-S.) As I recall the husband, Robert E. Porth, was found guilty of murder by pushing his wife Hilda down the stairs in their home. His wife's body was found on a wooded hillside in southwestern Virginia. Robert Porth may have been an engineer (possibly with [the old] Western Electric Co., later known as AT&T).

In February 1966, Robert E. Porth was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Hilda Porth. Her body was found in the woods in southwestern Virginia. Porth claimed that she had died in a fall, but he dumped her body over a remote hillside because he feared that he would be blamed for her death.

Porth was released from prison on parole in 1977, when he was 70 years old; he completed his parole in 1982. Little has been published about Porth since his release. In 1994 Porth was retired and living on a boat near Washington, N.C.

According to the Social Security Death Index, Porth died on Feb. 3, 1998.

Robert E. Porth was born January 7, 1909. Porth was issued a Social Security card in the state of Wisconsin (SS# 387-03-1248). His last known residence was Washington, NC (Beaufort, NC) 27889 where he lived by himself on a boat.

Default Thanks

This subject came up again at work. I haven't been on this site since I posted the request' I started the search again and started to rack my brain. and somehow I remembered the name Porth. I googled it, which brought me back to this site. I had forgotten about it. I was in that house sometime after the murder. Eerie

Does anyone remember if the daughter was a special needs child?

The daughter, Kathy Porth , born 2/17/1946 was one of my best childhood friends. Far from being a special needs child, she outshone everyone of us in beauty grace and intelligence. She was a senior at Reynolds high School when she died on May 3, 1963. She had been accepted to Randolph Macon College. She had a circle of devoted friends.

Kathy was adopted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1946 or 1947; her parents lived in Milwaukee before moving to Winston-Salem in 1958 (I think that was the year...)

I won't comment on the other things that have been posted; the memories are painful and no one will ever be completely sure of the facts.

I usually sign my name to anything I write, but this one is just too close and I'm not sure I want to open a further dialogue with folks I don't know. But I did want to describe Kathy.
