I don't kown alot about Madison other than there is a race track there. I think it is called 311 speedway. I don't think Madison is a very progressive place, but Greensboro and Winston-Salem are about 30 minutes away with everything you could possibly need. If country, rural living is what you are looking 4, this should be fine.

Madison is a fairly typical small southern town... nice people, but conservative with little cultural diversity. If you are a Protestant, regular church-goer, you'll fit in fine. Most of the employment was originally in the textile mills. Haven't kept up in the past 4-5 years as to what's still there.

Yes there's a WalMart. Closest Target will be in Greensboro or Winston-Salem. W-S is a bit more than 30 minutes, maybe 40-45, depending on where you're driving to and from. About 12 years ago, my hubby worked in Madison for about a year. We lived in Mayodan (contiguous to Madison) for a few months until we bought a home in W-S. I commuted to W-S for that brief time.

Although there is a consolidated countywide school system now, it hasn't been that long that there were 4 separate school systems in Rockingham County - Reidsville, Eden, Madison/Mayodan, and Rockingham County. There was tremendous resistance to merging the systems. Politically, I have no idea how it all worked out. Without looking at the stats, my gut feeling is that the schools are not among the better ones in NC, and that's not saying a whole lot.

To make a broad generalization, living in/near Madison would be somewhat like living in a latter-day Mayberry. Fine for some, not so for others.

Here's a link to Rockingham County's economic development organization, including tourism info. It will have a wealth of current info on Madison and the surrounding area.

thank you for your input, still very undecided.I assume Madison is mostly white. I would prefer living in a more diverse area but still a little country so my dogs can run out in the backyard and bark I will check out Madison , Kernersville.Mocksville and the surronding area

My visits to the area echo roadpony's post with the addition of the populous generally being older, in my observation. If are looking for some diversity perhaps small towns closer to the triad would suit you better.

To me, Mocksville and Kernersville both have a lot more to offer and are more appealing than Madison, BUT the real estate prices will be higher in general... stands to reason. Both have seen a lot more growth from outside, but are still livable.

Stay out of Kernersville unless you want to pay higher taxes .55% in addition to .69% county tax. Also the water and sewer rates are sky high. Expect a $200.00 plus water bill every 2 months.
