Oak Ridge, Summerfield and Jamestown are the best small towns close to GBO. Julian and Climax seem kinda isolated and far from GBO, but it's pretty countryside.
I disagree, the OP said within a 30 min drive, Mebane is within that time/mile frame. It also has block parties downtown at least once a month w/live music, and, a really nice library, the best mexican restaurant in this section of N.C. and easy access to most of the state, a good central local wherein people don't honk their horns and will speak to you on the street, it also has two coffeehouses, both good, of course I have a preference, but, doesn't everyone?

We lived in Forest Oaks CC south on the 421 and about 15 minutes from downtown.Very easy to get anywhere and definately rural with schools on the rise BUT we hated the very slow pace of life and other cultural odities from the South, as we had spent the last 18 years on the West Coast. You may feel more comfortable with customs coming from Alabama and definately where we were was convenient for transport

I agree. Within 30 minutes you will also find Gibsonville and Graham. I work with a woman who is looking for a house in Gibsonville because she can get a little more land. She does live in Mebane now and loves it. It's just a personal choice for her.

How about Elon College? Elon University welcomes community residents to functions, the folks are friendly, and Alamance Crossing provides many conveniences that the town lacks. We just visited friends there and found it very attractive.

I was raised in Gibsonville NC and now live in Rougemont NC. But I wish everyday I was back in my hometown of Gibsonville. The people are friendly, the town is close to everything with out the big city, and I just love it there.

No one's mentioned Randleman or Asheboro. Housing is lower in Randolph Co as are the taxes...If you are in south/central Greensboro, this is 15-30 minutes. The NC Zoo is in Asheboro...Randleman is very small, but still has a super Walmart!

I've only driven through Randleman, so I can't offer an opinion (though I did earlier recommend nearby Climax and Julian), but anyone should avoid Asheboro like the plague. They have the Zoo, but nothing else save ghettos, trailer parks, meth labs and cheap hookers ("cheap", assuming you don't consider the costs associated with treating the STD afterward). The zoo is one of the best in the nation, but Asheboro isn't even qualified to be the armpit of civilization. It's the taint.

Summerfield & Oak Ridge is your best bet. (IMO)

Summerfield & Oak Ridge is more a yuppie ish kind of rural with expensives and newer homes. Places like Juilian and Climax, and most of the small towns in Randolph County, are more traditionally rural with generations of families living close by and have not experienced the same growth as Summerfield and Oak Ridge. For the OP, it all depends on how you define rural and what exactly you're looking for.
