Good small towns around Greensboro to move to?
Hi everyone! My husband is looking at transferring his job to Greensboro NC. We would like to find a really small town with a 30 minute or less commute anywhere around Greensboro, that is rural, with good schools, with the basic stores, dr office, churches. We are used to the country and love it (especially older farmhouses) Somewhere with low crime and fun community things to do (love crafts, gardening, music). We are from Alabama. I would like to find somewhere around 4000-7000 population if possible. Any input would be great and thank you for your time. gingerpeaches

It all depends on the part of town where he'll be working and how close you like your basic amenities. I'd reccomend looking somewhere outside of Oak Ridge or Summerfield if his job is near the northwest side of Gboro. On the south, there's the Climax/Julian area. On the NE of town, maybe around Browns Summit, or between there and McLeansville & Gibsonville. Get too close to any of these smaller communities and there will be more cookie-cutter subdivisions, but even in those areas there are still some less-spoiled spots.

Small Towns
Also check out Jamestown - 4500 pop. very small town feel- but very easy to get to GSO, HPT, Winston Salem, all the Interstates, etc. Wide range of housing also. We have lived here for 13 years and would not go anywhere else.

Mebane is east of Greensboro, low crime, farm houses, old rural shacks, wonderful people. Population just went over 8k. Google maps at 32.5 miles from Greensboro and brings you into the Triangle if you go the other way. Bargain prices (so what's new?). Duke U just put in a division in Mebane.

Mebane is too far from Greensboro and it's east of Burlington, which is east of Greensboro. Mebane is closer to Chapel Hill/Carrboro than it is to Greensboro.
Oak Ridge, Summerfield and Jamestown are the best small towns close to GBO. Julian and Climax seem kinda isolated and far from GBO, but it's pretty countryside.

I thought Mebane has a little over 10,000? And I agree it's a great town but closer to the Triangle and not the best commute to Greensboro since there are so many closer options.

Like I said, it depends on the part of Gboro where he'll be working. Julian and Climax are within a 30-minute commute of southeastern Gboro and have a small number of the basic amenities that she asked about.

I'd check out Kernersville, it's a little bit larger than what you might be looking for but it has everything that you need and good schools
