I want to make a day trip from Greensboro to the moutains-no children and need somewhere that there is not much walking (arthritis). Don't want to spend all day driving-plan on taking picnic lunch-fishing would be a plus but not necessity. Any ideas? Needs to be easy directions-
From Greensboro, you have a couple of nice options. One would be to head north and hit the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, just south of Martinsville. I'm not sure about fishing around there, but no doubt you'd find some nice scenery and good picnic spots.
You could also head west for a lot of variety. One of my favorite spots is not really in the mountains proper, but right at the base of the Blue Ridge Escarpment; Stone Mountain State Park. There is an awesome granite monolith, waterfalls, great hiking (some of which is not too strenuous) and good fishing in the streams.
May I suggest taking US 220North from Greensboro to Rocky Mt VA, make a right on Rt. 122 east for about 25 miles to Smith Mountain Lake? You will pass by Bridgewater Plaza(on your right)where you can rent a boat and enjoy the lake and the mountains. You can pick up something to eat at the Plaza. Not much walking. Its only about an hour and half drive from Greensboro.
Great idea-have not been to the lake in several years and this is a great time of year for that-thanks!! Great directions for the directionally challenged
