i'm searching for a home to purchase. met this really nice agent that showed me a couple of properties (would have shown more but my free time was limited).

i'm interested in seeing homes and while i would readily pursue one that meets my requirements and is a good deal, i'm not in any great rush to get something immediately.

the agent wants me to sign an exclusive buyer agency agreement. while i haven't spoken to any other agent and would happily work with him, i am very uncomfortable signing this contract.

is this how these things are done? any insight will be welcome. thanks!

Yep pretty standard for it to happened this way. The first agent I had made me sign this after the first day of viewing house's. That was a few years ago and we where unable to find a house. This year we did not sign a contract until we made our first offer.
My advice would be to talk with your agent about anything and everything you have issue with. Buying a house can be a very stressfull time. Having the right agent will make the world of difference. I never really figured this out until our house purchase was completed how lucky I was to have such a wonderful helpful agent. I will use him again and would recommend him to anyone. Best of luck with your home hunting North Carolina is a wonderful state.

Default Exclusive Buyer Agency Agreement

That seems to be the trend here-try getting a return phone call from a real estate office if you are not represented by an agent. Agents only seem to want to deal directly with other agents, not prospective home buyers. One agent tried to get me to sign an agreement with her for 12 months-and if I bought something she had showed me after the end date in our agreement, she would still get paid, if the sale took place within a certain amount of time. Needless to say, I did not work with that agent.
