I grew up in Winston-Salem and spent lots of time just west of downtown. West End is a huge neighborhood full of homes as old as the late 1880s and as new as up toward the mid-1900s. Great, big, old trees. Other than West End specifically there are other neighborhoods, anywhere from middle class to extremely wealthy, west of downtown that are pretty neat, close to shopping and close to downtown. Ardmore is great, too, anywhere along Hawthorne Road from the Hanes Park area to about Knollwood St.

Hi afcountryboy,Thanks for the response. I have been looking online at listings in the Ardmore and Buena Vista neighborhoods and found a great place on Knollwood! Will be planning a weekend visit soon to check out the area in more detail. You said you grew up in WS, are you still there or have you moved on? Really appreciate your response.

The Ardmore area is a really nice and tends to have everything your initial description indicates. It's a family neighborhood with a really convenient distance from downtown, plus its own little areas. Most of the residences are single family houses, and there are a lot of other young families (couples and younger children) in the area. I lived here for a year and really loved it. (I ended up moving, but I'm more an apartment person, myself).
