If you like art, the Reynolda House (mentioned above) is a renowned museum of American Art. It is adjacent to the WFU campus. The Downtown Arts District will give you a decidely different flavor of W-S from that represented by auto racing at BG Stadium. The Arts District is pretty much centered around Trade and Sixth Streets. The Piedmont Craftsmen Gallery at that corner is one of the top fine craft galleries in the Southeast. There are other unique (and funky) studios and galleries in the neighborhood. Sweet Potatoes, on Trade Street, is one of my favorites restaurants in W-S. It is upscale Southern at its best.

It may not be as convenient for you on this visit, but I highly recommend Brookstown Inn on the southern end of downtown. It is located in a converted cotton mill.... great atmosphere and across the street from Ollie's Bakery, a local institution.

Just got back home a bit ago.

W-S was very nice, I enjoyed it quite a bit. The WF campus is gorgeous, and so is the state of NC itself. I liked how natural it was, as if everything was designed around the trees and natural features instead of just flattening them down and building over them.

We mainly drove around, looked at some rental houses, tried to get a feel for the area. Stayed right by the Hanes Mall by the Outback Steakhouse (nice area, but the mall itself wasn't that impressive to me...we have 3 or 4 just as big in Dallas alone).

I really enjoyed WF and seeing that area.

Only real drawbacks that we could find -

1) Houses with a fenced backyard didn't seem that common. House rental prices were great, but most had open yards or backed to a ravine or hill, which is beautiful, but not conducive at all to 2 big dogs.

2) I still am hesitant because of the weather.

3) A teaching job for my wife close by. Just not sure how easy that will be to obtain.

But you all have a very nice city, very pretty and welcoming. We very much enjoyed our time there, though it was all too brief.

After visiting with the WF people, it's pretty high on our list. I want to do litigation, and their litigation program is superb.

Thanks for all the suggestions and insights, they were very helpful!

Glad you enjoyed your visit! Well, the weather is only cold a few months out of the year. It will be spring here in another 5-6 weeks.

My husband used to live in Plano, TX back in the mid 80's. He isn't crazy about NC because of small town things like towns shutting down due to snow and early on Sunday, etc... but overall he doesn't miss TX. He said the traffic and commute time was awful and that was years ago.

He travels though so he isn't stuck. Me, I don't know any different since I grew up here!! Guess that is why I think our mall is so awesome! haha

Good luck in your decision!!
