We moved here from AZ; we had low maintaince desert landscaping (a yard of rock). We have been trying to maintain our lawn here with a lot of trouble. Some of the yard is in a lot of sun & the grass seems to get dried out. Other parts are in the shade and nothing grows. Last year, we tried putting down lime, grass seed & covered with hay; almost nothing grew.

Does anyone have any tips on how we can get grass to grow? What do we do & when do we do it?

Thanks for your help!

Here is a nice overview for growing lawns in NC: Lawn and Garden Tips - Lawn Tips

Both cool season and warm season grasses will grow in most areas of NC, and there are pros/cons to both types. Most people plant tall fescue, but it requires some care in the way of fertilizing and reseeding periodically. Warm season grasses like bermuda and zoysia area also popular. These types spread and fill in on their own, so they rarely need reseeding. However, they go dormant in winter so they look like crap for a third of the year (although they do look great during their growth season).

Good luck!
