I am thinking about moving to either Jacksonville, Fl or Greensboro, NC to open a donut shop. How is the donut business ? Do any of these cities have big franchises such as DD or Krispy Kreme. What are my chances to compete against them as an independent shop? My wife ia nail tech, will she have any problem finding a job ? Please help.

I don't know about Jacksonville, but Greensboro has three Dunkin Donuts and two Krispy Kreme Stores. KKs are also sold in most every gas station and grocery store here.

This is Krispy Kreme country you might want to look into Wilmington Boone or Asheville

KK is headquartered out of Winston-Salem. lIn my opinion however, these lack the personality of a local donut shop.

There is an independent (assuming) doughnut shop in Greensboro called "Donut World" but, I don't know anything about the place.

Donut World is a terrific shop run by an Asian family. I've gone several times since they opened. But with that sort of business, and in that kind of strip setting, I am doubtful of their chances to make it. An area like Tate St. or Friendly Center may generate significantly more business (at Friendly, the lunchtime traffic from Grimsley alone could probably justify the lease rates).

Boone used to have a local doughnut shop called Granny's Doughnuts, just off Blowing Rock Road, near the main post office. I loved it, and was too good of a customer. It's been a few years since it closed and I'm not sure the reason because I had already moved from Boone back to W-S. They may have closed due to retirement. It seemed to me that they had consistently good traffic.

Anyway, I was always floored that KK never thought that a store in Boone would make it (didn't meet their "normal" demographics). This was before their ill-advised mega-growth. There still isn't a DD or KK in Boone. I agree with SunnyKayak that Boone is a place you ought to look into. You might want to post in the Western NC forum for more localized responses.

As for your wife, a good nail technician should be able to build a good clientele most anywhere, but it may take some time.

In my opinion there is donut store glut in Greensboro. There are several KK and DD has expanded here recently. Take a look at Downtown Asheville.

Lexington has no KK or DK. We have the Fancy Pastry shop, they do good busy, but are a bakery with lots of different items, not just donuts. I think a donut shop would do well here, or anywhere else that is not big enough for the chains to bother with, yet have quite a lot of people. Lexington has ~ 20,000 people.
