I'm looking for information and maybe also trying to get information out there.
There is a neighborhood, Oak Hill, on the east side of Winston-Salem (off of Oak Grove Church Rd.) that falls completely within the corridor for the future urban loop. Several lots in this neighborhood are vacant, but many have been improved and are occupied. The NC DOT has already purchased several of the vacant lots, that I know of.
My question is in regard to the fact that there have been some homeowners in that neighborhood who have just recently lost their homes to foreclosure. Why would these owners not have sold their homes to the DOT instead of losing them outright to the bank?

The WS loop has been stalled for years by a group of citizens who sued the federal government based on environmental impact studies. Shortly after the suits began, DOT stopped buying homes and land for right-of-way and probably won't resume doing so until the suits are finished. Who knows when that will be.

So basically, many of these landowners and homeowners in the beltway's path have been in limbo, because DOT won't buy their land yet and private residents won't either b/c it's in the official path of the roadway.
