Deer are abundant, turkeys aren't really in the area, and the fishing is pretty good.

Really depends on what part of the piedmont you're referring to and whether you can people who will let you hunt/fish on their land.

Come up to Smith Mountain Lake, about 50 miles from the Triad, some of the best bass fishing in the U.S. The Bassmasters tournament at SML will be broadcast on ESPN on May 1.

Hunting is big in the mountains here in southern VA around Botetourt County(Roanoke area).

High Rock Lake in Davidson County/ Lexington is a great place. It's south of Winston-Salem. There are places for hunting deer mainly, but some turkey too. Also, fishing tournaments are held at the lake every year. Not sure on dates (you could google though I bet and find out). Lots of people go mucking (catfishing with your bare hands) around here. They've caught some huge ones in the lake that are almost as big as those catching them. All kinds of fish are around the lake though & lots of public access spots. Hunting permitted along some roads & places along lake (open property, places around that don't want hunters have stickers on the trees on those open places). There's shooting ranges & hunt clubs too.

Deer Hunting is great down here, I've been getting two or three Deer each year for about the last 20 years, the limits are generous-6 on the initial license, then, pay a couple of dollars and get a tag worth 2 more, last year, each licensed hunter could have legally harvested 86 Deer. I suspect that the limits are so high because the insurance companies are getting tired of paying to have cars repaired. Deer are quite plentiful so are Turkeys (meliagris galopavo), but, being shy and extremely wary, they can be difficult to spot. Bass fishing is very good to excellent depending on where you are,(try Cane creek on Hwy 54 toward Chapel Hill) but, if you really want excitement, go to the outer banks and catch Tuna! or Marlin, or Dolphin, or Wahoo.

Thanks Dusty. I've been out of Oregon Inlet before. It was a blast! Is it fairly easy to get access to private propery for hunting in the region or are you pretty restricted to public land. I don't really want to join a hunt club, because I don't believe in running dogs. It's just not my kind of hunting.

I have access to a fairly substantial piece of property, get back in touch with me before the season for Deer starts.....and..... of course you would need a N.C. hunting license. The game wardens check me annually, often more than once, mostly because they like to talk. I bought my N.C. lifetime license back in the spring of 1987 (both hunting and fishing, freshwater and salt, an all-inclusive license). I do not run dogs, one of the stipulations for having access to the piece of property I hunt, (it is three really large pastures for calves, dogs run and will kill calves) I have to shoot any dog or coyote I see on the property. I am also the responsible party if anyone who I let hunt with me, does anything really foolish. Calves do not look like Deer! My shots on Deer start at...approximately 250 yards, my longest was over 600 yds. I've had closer shots, I just never take em.

Sweet! Thanks Dusty. I would certainly get in touch with you when we get down there. Believe, you don't have to worry about me, I am anal when it comes to regulations and conservation.
