Hello everyone,

I'm moving to the Winston-Salem area for next school year (I'll be starting grad study at Wake Forest). I'll have up to $600/month for rent, and I was wondering if anyone has rented before here and could let me know where good places to live are. I'll have a car, so it doesn't have to be extremely close to WFU, but near it or a bus line would be nice.

Also, any advice or comments you could give me about the area would be much appreciated. I haven't been able to visit the school or city, yet, and so any of your thoughts about the area will be really helpful. Thanks!

I lived at Crowne Oaks for a while, right after they were built. I'd recommend it, although only 600/month is going to be tough:

Winston Salem Apartment, Crowne Oaks Apartments

Actually, I like most of their properties in the area:

Crowne Partners

Are you looking for an apt., a room, a house, or what? There are lots of ads on craigslist that are in your price range. You can also search the apartment sites like apartmentguide.com. I'd suggest looking them over, and if you find some that interest you let us know where they are and we'll try to help from there. In general, the west/northwest side of town is where you want to be (since that's where Wake is located), so look for areas around Country Club Rd., Robinhood Rd., Reynolda Rd., etc. But it's not a huge city so you can live pretty much anywhere and have a short commute. The downtown area is starting to liven up a bit, so you might also consider something in the Ardmore, West End, and West Salem neighborhoods.
