Hopefully enough people will purchase the books in addition to sitting and reading them. Otherwise this place will suffer the same unfortunate fate as did Pic-A-Book on the eastside in 2006. The good news is that they don't have much competition in this location.

Exactly, although I believe The Open Book had much more local competition than Pic-A-Book. Both became victims of the Internet era and I would not be surprised to see other stores in the Upstate suffer the same fate.
What is "slightly different" about the business model? Will they not rely on the purchase of literature, movies, and/or edible refreshment like nearly every other bookstore in the area?

I think what the poster means is that it is a nonprofit bookstore. It's affiliated with the Hub City Writers Project and all proceeds from sales goes towards their programs. They were also accepting tax-deductable contributions to help fund the operation of the store.
