Hi my name is Paul and I'm new to Greenville. I recently returned to Greenville (I was here previously in Fall 2009) and I'm looking to get involved around here and meet new people but I have no idea where to begin. People have spoken of downtown itself and getting involved at church but I'm not sure where to start. This is especially hard since I'm 20 years old and it doesn't seem like any activity out there deals with that young adult age group. Not to mention the closest big college is Clemson which is an hour away and I'm not heading out there alone, too sketchy for my liking. Does anyone have any ideas? It would be much appreciated. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Default University

Paul,

You may want to check out Furman University in Greenville. There's a lot going on there as far as sustainability is concerned. Also, they have free concerts every Thursday night in their outdoor amphitheatre. There's all sorts of events going on, so check out their web site at Furman.edu.

Another thing you can do (if you are into health and fitness) is read Natural Awakenings magazine (it's in all the Publix stores near the exit as well as all the natural food stores). They have a calendar of events listed each month and news briefs about all the new local businesses.

Check out the Bohemian Cafe on Stone Ave. next to the record store. I believe they have cool events as well.

There's some great churches around where you can dress casually and their music is more modern, such as Summit Church in Mauldin, Cornerstone Church in Greenville, and Redemption World Outreach Center near Haywood Mall (Redemption also has a health club and place to eat called the Imagine Center).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips coconutgirl1. I'd definitely like to visit Furman University since it is a college atmosphere and would contain people my age who are in college. However, in my personal opinion, going out to a random college alone is kind of sketchy. I mean if I even knew someone there who could take me, or someone I could meet up with there to show me around then it'd be more appropriate. Otherwise i'd feel kind of random being out there by myself.

I'll make sure to look into Natural Awakenings and Bohemian Cafe for events and ways to get involved as well since you think they would help get me further involved in the area.

And as far as the churches are concerned, I've already looked into Brookwood in Simpsonville which I heard was good and even Pelham Baptist Church which also looks good as well. Those churches you mentioned also sound good. Are they more modern and contemporary or conservative. Also, do they have a young adults group that many college aged kids might attend too?

Any other tips you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
