I consider Greenville the finest city in the southeast. I have lived there, in Birmingham, AL, two places in south Georgia, Richmond, VA, Bluefield, VA, and Hattiesburg, MS. Richmond and Greenville compare favorably. The leadership of both cities is generally progressive. Both have arts, but I think Greenville has the better art museum. Both have universities with significant reputations. Both have acceptable to pretty good orchestras. Both are beautiful, each with a river flowing through it, but the Reedy in Greenville is a stream compared to Richmond's James River. Richmond is about 3x the size of Greenville. There are more local TV stations in Richmond, and of course, the proximity to Washington, DC is a definite cultural advantage. Greenville, however, is half-way between Charlotte and Atlanta, both of which offer significant cultural opportunities. But Greenville itself is no slouch in that area.
Greenville has two private, church-related universities: one progressive-to-liberal and the other conservative-to-fundamentalist. Both have excellent arts programs with very good orchestras, visual arts, and community arts events well worth attending. Richmond has a progressive-to-liberal church-related university and a public university with a med school. Greenville has a major teaching hospital but not a med school. The Richmond private university has fine law and business schools, but neither in Gville has either.
If you like SEC football, you will find one of the universities' athletics schedules a delight. Both cities have minor league baseball.
Air transportation sucks at both cities, but each has a nice network of interstate highways to whisk you away to beach (same distance), mountains (closer to Gville), and a 'big city' (ATL and DC).
Banking reigns in Richmond and technology in Gville.
Climate is similar despite the more northernly location of Richmond.
Should one wish to find like-minded friends, it will happen anywhere. I know, I've lived everywhere.
