Default The shopping thread.

Oh, it was only a matter of time before this came up. This thread is devoted to mostly newcomers who want to know what large shopping centers there are and what each one has to offer in terms of retail/restaurant establishments. First is Haywood Mall, which at 1.25 million square feet is the largest mall in South Carolina. It ocated on Haywood Road just off of I-385 and recently went through a multi-million dollar renovation. The exterior of the mall doesn't look to hot except for at the entrances, but the inside is amazing.

Next up is Magnolia Park Town Center, which will be located on Woodruff Road and open in the summer of 2009. Before you read anything below, please read this article first to understand what is going on with this development:
Magnolia Park Town Center: News (broken link)

A landmark destination-
Magnolia Park Town Center, formerly the Greenville Mall, is currently being transitioned from an enclosed mall to a 676,000 square foot, open-air shopping center that will include offices and a hotel. Current tenants include Sports Authority and Regal Cinemas, with an additional contract finalized to construct a Rooms to Go. It is designed from the ground up to be a lifestyle center and community gathering place. The high-profile site will serve as a major landmark destination for the entire region. The buildings and spaces of Magnolia Park will reflect the simple and refined traditions of the region while illustrating the light contemporary lifestyle that makes Greenville a much-coveted destination for achieving a high quality of life. Magnolia Park's refreshing approach to urban living includes plenty of options for shopping, dining, work and play with upscale amenities and conveniences - the perfect place to relax with friends, spend time with family or enjoy some leisure time. Magnolia Park will flourish with a distinct blend of specialty retail, upscale dining, state-of-the-art offices, and world-class hospitality, all in one pedestrian-oriented lifestyle village.

Please ignore ALL site plans you see on websites posted, except for this one. They are old and out-dated. This is the only one that is new and valid (Page 2): http://www.theshoppingcentergroup.co...s/pf000415.pdf The grey you see on the site plan are parking garages. There will be three of them in all.

I am so insanely excited about a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse coming to Greenville, but I wish they would put it downtown. I guess it's good it's at the less busier end of Woodruff Rd...though it will be just like the rest soon.

Gman,
With all due respect, the inside of the haywood mall isn't amazing. The thin, 80's decor carpet is filthy and covered in every stain known to mankind and looks as if it's at least 10 years old. In a word, it's disgusting. Replace it with hardwoods and then we'll talk. The foodcourt is awful as well. The rest is pretty nice. You're correct about the outside, other than the remodeled entrances the rest of the edifice reeks of 1950's Soviet era commie blocks. The outside of JC Penny's is, well, ahem....

This is totally my speculation but I expect a mall or should I say, "lifestyle center" to be built on Harrison Bridge Rd./Fairview in the next 5-7 years. It's the epitome of prime real estate and the demographics are there. This county has the pop. to support more than 1 mall.

Friday we were in Lennox Square in Atlanta. That's a mall!

Lennox Square is a mall, yes. Atlanta is also like, a billion times larger than Greenville...

I'm not a fan of malls to begin with, but I think Haywood Mall is perfectly fine for Greenville. Sure, a second mall would be good but there's nothing wrong with the current one.

Well, malls are good if I really need to find something there but I'm just really not a big fan of shopping to begin with, haha. I'll head over there every now and then. I usually get pretty aggravated with the people walking around in there too, but that's beside the point.

I do agree that Haywood Mall isn't the absolute nicest of malls, but it is definitely better than it was a few years ago! I was in Boston last summer and they have some awesome malls. It's pretty cool how they would just be in the bottom few floors of giant buildings.

And yes...many people have trouble with my username. (seeing as it's my username for AIM, gmail, and every other site i'm a member of) It came about a few years ago during my obsession with fire (pyro) and our group of friends (227 - not a gang, haha...actually i don't even know how that came about).

I lol'd when you admitted to having an obsession with fire. I guess you'll never be accused of being in denial. Is this something that has gotten you in the news before, i.e is this a destructive thing? Really curious.
